SB 257 CHOOSE LIFE LICENSE PLATES (Senator John Carona)

Currently, 26 states have a license plate that reads "Choose Life", which is meant to promote adoption. The use of these license plates has raised more than $14 million for the mission of supporting pregnant women who are considering adoption. Texas does not have such a license plate and is missing the opportunity to promote awareness for adoption. The "Choose Life" license plate is a simple way to advance the cause of life at no cost to the taxpayers.

SB 257 would amend Section 504 of the Transportation Code to create the "Choose Life" license plate. The bill establishes a "Choose Life" account in the General Revenue Fund. From the revenues generated from the sale of the license plates, the Texas Department of Transportation would recoup their General Revenue Fund administrative costs and the remainder of the funds would be deposited into the new account. The funds would then be used to provide resources through charitable organizations for women who are pregnant and considering adoption, infants who are awaiting placement with adoptive parents, training and advertising related to adoption, or to provide for pregnancy testing and pre-adoption and post-adoption counseling.

As an adoptive parent, this bill is very important to me and I look forward to its passage.

As a conservative, I believe in less government involvement into our lives. In that light, this bill is hypocritical. It also comes off as Republicans abusing their majority, which I really hoped they wouldn't do this session. If you want to express your opinion, get a bumper stickers or vanity plates.

I think adoption is a great thing and I wish there were more resources available to help women, children and families with adoption, but this bill does not give any money to adoption services or promote adoption. If this bill was promoting adoption it would say, "Choose Adoption" or at least send the revenue to non-profit adoption agencies. This bill only sends money to crisis pregnancy centers, which are unregulated, unlicensed, pro-life volunteer centers that provide sonograms and pregnancy tests.

Although I am for this bill, I still struggle with helping children and teenagers giving birth to babies. Its a hard line to decide which is better....irresponsible sex or abortion. I wish this bill would help pay for prevention instead of adoption.

Adoption is a good option for women who find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy. Open adoption allows contact with the child over the years without the parenting responsibility. Raising money to fund adoption education is a good thing!
