Research indicates that dropout rates are five times higher at disciplinary alternative education programs (DAEPs) than at mainstream schools. Parental engagement is critical to helping students address disciplinary problems and complete their education. SB 49 would foster parental engagement by ensuring that parents are properly informed regarding their child's proposed disciplinary placement. Specifically, the bill would require districts to provide the parents of a child who has been assigned to a DAEP information about free programs that help students complete coursework required for graduation. It would require campus-level administrators to hold and document a scheduled conference during which this information is communicated to the student and his or her parents. Involving parents in the process from the beginning will help give students with disciplinary problems an opportunity to correct them and succeed academically.
